As a result of a fire at the Brazilian Antarctic station Comandante Ferraz in Antarctica, 2 people were killed and another was injured.
The fire destroyed approximately 70% of the research station.
The fire broke out in the engine room, where the power generators were located, at about 2:00 am Brazilian time.
Two soldiers, Junior Officer Carlos Alberto Vieira Figueiredo and Sergeant Roberto Lopez dos Santos were found dead among the wreckage of the station after the fire. Their remains were flown home on February 28, 2012. They were honored at a military funeral held at the Gallery Air Force Base.
